CAB showcases Fall 2024 calendar

CAB is thrilled to be back on campus and we are pumped for our upcoming events! We are beyond excited to welcome all of you, familiar faces and new students, to this year’s lineup. Our new team has been busy planning some awesome new events for this year like CAB Kick-Off, a big tailgate for the first home football game, CAB Field Day, packed with fun outdoor activities. We’re also bringing back some of your favorites like CAB After Dark, Movie Nights, Casino Night and more! Get ready for some awesome collaboration events with other student organizations on campus too! Anyone can attend our events, and you can find our event schedule on our CAB magnets, our social media pages and our CAB website. Make sure to register for events you are interested in, which can also be done through our CAB website! This school year is going to be packed with fun, and we can’t wait to see you at our events!

In the 1930s, the Homeowners Land Corporation created a series of redlining maps, like the one above of Waterloo, Iowa. These maps classified areas of the cities based on the level of real estate security, which likely played a role in companies denying loans to minority populations for decades. The effects are still felt today, with Wallstreet 24/7 ranking Waterloo as the sixth worst place to be Black in the United States in 2023.

I’m a senior double majoring in English and religious studies, with a minor in creative writing. I’ve been working with the Northern Iowan since January 2022, serving as copy editor until August 2023, when I was given the opportunity to be the managing editor.  I started my student journalism career in 2020 during my junior year of high school, where I was one of three students in my school’s new Intro to Journalism class. When COVID shut down the school, our little class continued to work on building our student news site, The Orbit, which still publishes today. I served as an editor and web designer until graduating in 2021. Though I don’t write often, I still enjoy working behind the scenes to bring UNI and the Cedar Valley community quality news by working on the website. I like to work on major feature pieces when I get the chance to, whether it be highlighting small businesses or getting the latest updates on campus construction.
