Finishing out their regular season strong, the UNI wrestling team took seven of the 10 bouts and defeated University at Buffalo, 29-9.

Snapping the five-match loss streak and advancing 4-10 overall (3-5 in MAC duals), the Panther victory dropped the Bulls 2-6 in the MAC standings and 10-9 overall.

Starting out the night were two falls coming from sophomore Leighton Gaul and redshirt, freshman Josh Alber.

Competing from the 125lb. bout, Gaul took only 3:42 to pin No. 33 opponent Kyle Atkins.

Keeping the momentum going, Alber followed with a pin in the 133lb. bout in 4:47 against Buffalo’s Bryan Lantry.

Breaking out of his shell to win his first career match, Tyler Willers took the third Panther victory of the night in the 141lb. weight class by scoring 6-5 over Bull Brandon Lapi.

Freshman Bryce Steiert continued to prove his strength as he earned a 13-2 major decision over his opponent in the 157lb. bout.

Shutting Buffalo’s Rrok Ndokaj out in an 8-0 major decision was Panther Cooper Moore. Moore returned to the mat for the first time since Feb. 5 and prepares for the MAC tournament as he is ranked No. 1 in the conference.

The sixth Northern Iowa victory of the night came from Drew Foster in the 184lb. weight class. In a fight to get on top, Foster and his opponent, Joe Ariola, went back and forth as Foster notched the final takedown in the third period to score 7-5 against the Bulls.

Panther powerhouse Blaize Cabell refused to give up his winning-streak as he fought through his heavyweight match against Jake Gunning—earning a 9-6 victory. Cabell is one of three Panthers ranking No. 1 in the MAC, joined with Moore in the 165lb. weight class and Dylan Peters in the 125lb. weight class.

The UNI wrestling team will return to the mat March 5 and 6 as they compete in the MAC Tournament in Ypsilanti, MI.
